Communicative Language Training

Customized Lessons & Learning Programs

Competence & confidence are key factors to effective communication & negotiation

The ability to communicate well on a personal and professional level in a work environment is vital in order to remain competitive. One World Language Training provides customized lessons and learning programs complete with goals, objectives, and monthly progress reports for individual tutoring & group instruction from beginner to advanced for adults, adolescents and children.

With a focus on Business English, English for General Purposes, Conversational English, Travel & Leisure, or both TOEFL & TOEIC Test Preparation, we offer results-oriented language instruction committed to helping and inspiring students to learn.

Developing an appropriate curriculum designed to discover every student’s learning style, our instructors engage students to be more relaxed through communicative activities designed for interaction in groups. Each student receives tailored hands-on training to reinforce their existing language skills while filling in any learning gaps. In order to build a strong foundation, we place an emphasis on improving the students’ proficiency in listening and speaking.

By creating a trusting atmosphere and breaking down large learning tasks into comprehensive manageable segments, students’ retention of subject matter increases. This in turn builds confidence improving fluency and the ability to recall.

Our Methodology - “Communicative Language Training”

Customized Classes include:

  • Oral Drills
  • Listening Comprehension
  • Grammar
  • Accent Modification
  • Role-play
  • Controlled Activities
  • Open Activity & Conversation
  • Error Analysis & Correction

Capabilities - Here are just a few of the tasks the student will be able to execute:

  • Initiate and sustain formal and informal conversations
  • Comprehend a native or non-native English speaker at least 80% to 100% better
  • Speak confidently on the telephone using appropriate jargon
  • Correctly use terms and phrases directly associated with a particular field or activity
  • Read, write and assimilate letters, e-mails, documents, statistical reports, news articles, etc.
  • Negotiate effectively with clients and suppliers
  • Understand and participate in lectures, seminars, meetings, debates, legal proceedings, etc.
  • Prepare and give presentations and speeches

Facets to Learning a Foreign Language

As small children, listening first then speaking second was the way we learned our native language, and is true of the adult learning process. For a first-time learner conversational practice alone is only useful after a basic understanding of vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, pronunciation and intonation is assimilated. Once a comprehensive base becomes evident, the ability to recall and to use a new word or sentence structure improves by 100%, thereby accelerating the total process. It is a proven fact that students become more motivated and are able to react spontaneously once they have acquired a level of confidence about their communicative skills.

Methodology

The method known as ‘Communicative Approach’ or ‘Direct Method’ is the proven modern-day approach to learning, used by the best language schools today.  It is a ‘hands-on’ method based on allowing the learner to be actively involved in both speaking and listening during the lesson.  After every new structure or vocabulary is presented, the students are then asked to practice in a sequence of controlled-activities each time relying less on the instructor and more on themselves so newly-learned syntax may become incorporated into their working knowledge.

Skills Improvement & Practice

Within the selected material presented, students’ communicative and comprehensive skills are perfected to a point that they are able to be effective and in control in any variety of circumstances. The simulation of everyday real-life situations ensures that students learn quickly as they are encouraged to ‘think’ in the target language rather than to translate.

The use of visual images and ‘props’ as well as interactive role-play, helps stimulate creativity, and shorten response time making it an essential part of the learning process.

Depending on the level and specific needs of the student, a two-hour lesson may be divided as follows:

  • Pronunciation/Accent Reduction       15 Minutes

  • Grammar & Structure                         30 Minutes

  • Oral Drills                                             15 Minutes

  • Controlled Activities                           30 Minutes

  • Open Activity & Conversation           30 Minutes

These guidelines may be modified/customized to accommodate a student’s particular needs and to determine whether more focus should be placed on ‘listening and speaking’, or ‘reading and writing’.

Whether your interest is in improving, developing and exercising your already existing abilities, or if you are learning a language for the first time, we will help you to gain the language skills necessary to achieve your goals.

Accent Reduction & Modification Training

ACCENT REDUCTION & MODIFICATION TRAINING

Clear, concise, communication is essential

If your goal is clear communication, our Accent Modification Training assures you that within just a few weeks of intensive training, you will have a new feeling of confidence and be more effective when participating in or facilitating meetings, giving presentations, and having conference calls as well as face-to-face conversations.

The reduction of a non-native’s accent benefits both the company and the individual

Accents that are difficult to understand can inhibit the professional’s ability to perform as productively as possible and may ultimately inhibit their achieving their full career potential. They can also limit the potential of the individual to communicate both internally and to their target market. While a non-native’s accent can never be completely eliminated, it can be greatly reduced. With increased awareness of proper vowel and consonant pronunciation, tonic stress, voice modulation, articulation and word choice an individual will be  able to monitor his/her progress by the effectiveness of their communication.

Accents can be challenging for both the listener and the speaker

Every language has a distinct rhythm and ‘melody’. Hearing, distinguishing, then reproducing the appropriate rhythm and intonation patterns of American English is essential for clear communication. For foreign-born individuals who wish to successfully navigate their thoughts into understandable words, it is essential to hear the sounds before being able to produce them.

To teach a clearer more distinct way of speaking, clear pronunciation requires practice

English is not a phonetic language, and so the spelling of words can create confusion. The student must become less dependent on the visual and more dependent on the aural interpretation of words. While a learner’s natural ability will take them to a certain level, focused practice and hard work will get them much further.

Level I, II & III Training Programs

We offer private, semi-private or small group (2 to 5 students) training or a combination. These may be conducted in a weekend workshop, during lunch, or after work in a quiet private setting. For best results, the student is encouraged to record each session to monitor his/her improvement and will be given take-home exercises to practice with between sessions.

Our common goal:

  • To lessen an individual’s frustration at not being understood and continually having to repeat themselves.
  • To redirect the listener to what the individual is saying rather than expending the effort in trying to understand them.
  • To raise the individual’s self-esteem by a showing measurable improvement after hard work and practice.
